Physiotherapy
Durhams Children’s Physiotherapy Service works with children of all ages from 0-16 years old, (and 0-18 if in specialist education). They aim to support our children and young people to achieve their potential and encourage active participation in their daily life.
Their team is made up of Chartered Physiotherapists and Physiotherapy Assistants and aim to provide quality, child centred care to manage physical conditions. They work independently across the Trust and also complete clinics alongside Paediatricians, Orthopaedic Surgeons and Orthotists.
They provide specialist care for a range of children and young people in Children’s Physiotherapy who may experience:
- Neuromuscular disorders, e.g. muscular dystrophy
- Musculoskeletal Problems, e.g. knee pain, back pain
- Acute injuries e.g. fractures, sports injuries, post-surgery rehabilitation
- Neurological conditions e.g. cerebral palsy, head injury
- Rheumatological conditions e.g. juvenile idiopathic arthritis
- Congenital syndromes
- Delayed development
Children and young people who are registered with a GP practice in County Durham and Darlington (excluding Seaham, Murton and South Hetton) requiring support from a Physiotherapy Service.

Speech & language therapy
Referrals to the service should be made to CDDFT using the referral form linked below and returning it to: cddft.childrenssalt@nhs.net. Referral form can be found HERE. If you have any concerns or queries email cddft.childrenssalt@nhs.net
Occupational therapy

Durham sensory team
Durham Sensory Team provides assessment, support, advice and direct intervention for children and young people with a sensory loss and their families. The team comprises the Deaf and Hearing Support Team and the Vision/Multi-Sensory Support Team and includes Qualified Teachers of the Deaf, Qualified Teachers of Children and Young People with Vision/Multi-Sensory Impairment, a Specialist Speech Therapist, a Habilitation Specialist, a Communication Support Worker, a Deaf Worker, and Specialist Support Workers.
They offer support from the point of diagnosis (often at birth or a very young age) and work with children and young people from birth to twenty-five.
They work in homes, family hubs, nurseries, schools, and other educational establishments and provide a flexible service according to a child’s age, developmental stage, additional needs (if any) and setting.
Their pre-school team can provide home visits as well as group sessions in sensory rooms and other settings across County Durham, enabling families to provide mutual support for one another.
Their aim is to help parents and carers and educational settings to understand the impact of a child’s sensory loss and offer advice and support to maximise inclusion.
They also help children and young people to develop language and communication skills, social and independent living skills, and other compensatory skills to enable them to access education. However, they are mindful that the challenges are not restricted to the classroom and work closely with other agencies to encourage participation in the wider community. Emotional health and Resilience team
Emotional health, advice and guidance for 5-19 years. The emotional health and resilience team can support when a child or young person first shows signs or asks for help with their emotional health or managing emotions. They also have a duty line for advice or guidance or to discuss a referral. They are open Monday to Friday, 9am – 5pm. CAMHS & the single point of access
County Durham and Darlington have a single point of access for referrals and self-referrals to the CAMHS services. To contact the team please email tewv.camhscountydurhamdarlington@nhs.net or call 111 and option 2.
