Growth Equestrian – Riding School & Equine Assisted Therapy Centre

Based in Easington in East Durham their assisted therapy centre currently provides support to a wide range of adults and children on a weekly basis. They have children who attend their equine sessions seeking relief from exam pressure, dealing with bullying at school, coping with anxiety and depression, non-verbal ASD, PTSD, neurodevelopmental disorders, drug and alcohol misuse, involvement in county lines, eating disorders and much more. Splashability

Spennymoor Leisure Centre – Seaside Splashability every Sunday 4pm-5pm. These sessions provide an opportunity for disabled children, young people and adults to take part in a fun exercise while improving their confidence in the water. This includes the use of the Wave, slide and Seaside Splash Zone. £2.50.

Gold Strokes

Another based in Sunderland ( Southmoor Academy) – They are a fully inclusive swim school for any one with a passion for swimming and offer “Additional needs” swimming lessons. Their teachers create bespoke pathways for each swimmer to fit their individual additional needs, which will allow the swimmer to progress in a fun and safe environment. They run an additional needs lesson on a Sunday morning to help individuals who would struggle in a mainstream class. This class caters for individuals with varying different needs. Sportsability Gymnastics

At South Durham Gymnastics at Spennymoor Leisure centre. These popular sessions are usually available during school holiday times. They are designed for those up to 18 years old with Autistic Spectrum Disorder to be able to explore the gym in a safe and fun way with their parents and siblings. Full use of the gymnastics hall equipment, including the trampolines, bars, air track, inflatable challenger and foam pits are available to participants to explore. Smile through sport

A disability sport charitable organisation based in the North East who offer inspiring learning and enjoyment through sport. They have had participants as young as 6 months old and as old as 103-year-old and siblings can attend too. They offer holiday sessions and regular term time SEND Activity sessions in County Durham. Durham Cricket Foundation

For individuals with disability, cricket can provide a perfect opportunity to get involved with the community and keep fit. Their disability cricket programme is designed to ensure that cricket is accessible to every person and community in our county. The provisions they offer are : free softball and table cricket sessions, visually impaired cricket, Super 1s (A Lord’s Taverners programme that gives young people with a disability aged 12-25 the chance to play regular, competitive cricket), physical disability and learning disability cricket and a disability school and community programme. Their mission is to enable people with disabilities to enjoy cycling and to give them opportunities for personal development by providing suitable cycles, equipment and support. Adam James Sports

Adam James Sports offers professional coaching and sport education programmes for schools and children in the North East covering ages 18 months to 18 years. Durham Moor Tennis Club

They offer a warm, friendly welcome as well as competitive and social tennis, suited to all abilities. They also have an excellent balance between social, competitive and junior/beginner play opportunities. As a club they boast 2 all-weather Astroturf courts with LED floodlights for all year round play from 8am – 10pm, 7 days a week. Consett Beacons – Disability Netball Sessions

A disability netball group based in Consett and part of Consett Steelers Netball Club. All welcome! They have lots of club volunteers to support participants so they can split into age or stage appropriate groups so everyone is catered for. Alpha Boxing Gym

SEN sessions are free & take place in Consett . No booking needed. They state age 5+. 11 Trafalgar St, Consett DH8 5AP. “Our SEN boxing class is designed to provide a safe, inclusive & supportive space for children with special educational needs. This class focuses on sensory, building confidence, coordination and social skills through fun & engaging boxing activities. With experienced instructors & tailored exercises, every child is encouraged to grow at their own pace. Andrew knows the struggles his son goes through and the struggles as a parent, and believes a gym that offers classes tailored to children with SEN struggles, would benefit the community greatly.

Inclusive Connection Durham CIC

A new CIC with activities in North Durham. Current groups are :

Pelton Community Centre : Tweenies gaming group that has computers, gaming ,consoles, crafts, baking, pool and air hockey tables for 7-13 year olds to come with their parents carers and enjoy time together and hopefully make some new peer connections. (Xmas session 20 December with themed melting snowmen biscuits). Sessions are £5 per child.
Stanley Burnside primary school is 9.30-10.30 every third Thursday This is a parents group younger children are welcome to attend with parents. Refreshments provided. Free
There’s also a fabric UV Xmas party at the glo house 20 December 11-12.30 for an artee partee where you can create your own design and then paint it on fabric (bring your own t shirt etc or fabric will be provided) and other Xmas themed activities.
Tesco , Consett : Second Saturday of the month 11am-12.30pm. Parent carer coffee morning. Children welcome- They will have mega bloks, crafts and lego etc available. Refreshments provided and some helpful books and opportunities to chat to other parents. £1.50. Starts January 2026.
Coming soon- They are in talks with Sacriston youth project to run some send youth groups at their hub and allotment in the new year.

The Sensory place

A volunteer-led group offering a network of support to families of children with all disabilities aged 5-18 years. They offer courses and sensory-friendly events ( Including Sensory Sessions at South Durham Gymnastics and silent discos). They can help whether your child is a sensory seeker or avoider (or both). Cheesy Waffles Project

The Cheesy Waffles Project is a registered charity for children, young people and adults with additional needs from across County Durham. Although their project is predominantly for people with learning disabilities it is not exclusive to, and everyone is welcome to attend. They have been providing a range of sessions, activities and more to members since 2004. They currently have 10 clubs during the week for children, young people and adults, plus a Saturday session, daytime provision and activities during half term and summer holidays. eXtreme Group

An Investing in Children project. A group of young people in County Durham with SEND who meet to share ideas and help to make SEND services better for young people. eXtreme members attend events on behalf of Investing in Children, organise events and work with Durham County Council and the NHS! They enjoy having our voice heard, being respected, meeting new people and building their confidence. The eXtreme Group is recognised by the SEND Strategy and Accountability group as a representative voice for children and young people with SEND living in County Durham.

Investing in Children

Children and young people have rights, and are full citizens now. They are the experts of ‘being them’ and of their own ‘lived lives’. They have a dedicated team of staff, volunteers and student placements, running groups, projects, forums, training and research putting children and young people at the centre of all they do. Investing in Children is a Community Interest Company. Established in 1995 originally as a partnership between Durham County Council and the NHS its purpose is to promote the rights of children and young people, and to ensure that their voices are heard in decisions that are made about them within public and voluntary sector services. In recent years Investing in Children has become more involved within the mental health agenda with links to both Children’s and Adults’ Services in a range of roles including coordination and project delivery as well as leading on young people’s engagement and participation. Investing in Children currently oversees the coordination and delivery of the following projects:

Intergrating

They are a local North East based charity, established in 2000, offering fun and safe services to children and young adults with a range of disabilities and learning difficulties aged between 5 to 25 years. The children and adults using their service are their members, who live in or are able to access the districts of Durham City and Chester-le-Street. Annually, they work with around 90 children and adults, delivering over 10,000 activity hours during both term time and school holidays. They organize weekly activities in the local community for their members to have fun in a safe and supported way so they can socialize, make friends, build positive relationships and learn or develop various skills, while providing respite to parents and carers from their caring responsibilities. All Disabilities Matter

Based in Newton Aycliffe their facebook group was formed to support anyone who has any kind of disability, mental health issues or just wants somebody to talk to about all the daily struggles that life can throw at us, so you can all share our experiences with each other and where to go for help and support if needed. They run regular events and groups. They host two weekly support groups on Wednesdays and Fridays for parents, carers, and individuals with disabilities. These offer participants the chance to share their experiences, seek peer support, and enjoy a chat. They also run a SEND social club on Monday evenings at Café HQ in Newton Aycliffe where participants can take part in crafts, games, and music sessions, fostering a lively and social atmosphere. Creative Kitchen HQ

They run a child SEND exclusive sessions for 5-12 years in Consett. Family session exclusively for children with SEND and their families. All of our workshops are themed to capture the imagination of your little chef! Each session you will explore a new recipe, measure, mix, cut, create and cook up lots of fun along the way. Each workshop includes 1 hour of cooking fun and whilst your tasty dish cooks you can enjoy stories, crafts and games. ***Please note parents/carers are required to attend this sessions**. Classes are suitable for those of current school age Reception to Year 6 with SEND. Siblings are also welcome to book. The A Game is an online community group for autistic young people aged 13-17 in the North East. It offers a safe, inclusive space for members to connect, make friends, share experiences, and find support. Adventure Valley – Caloo fun space

Based near Durham City – A new fully inclusive and accessible play area within Adventure Valley. The new area includes- two user accessible roundabout, wheelchair accessible seesaw, wheelchair accessible swing, multiple sensory spaces, braille activity panel, 44 accessible play activities, multiple slides, towers and climbing walls. Adventure Valley is North East’s biggest Family Adventure Park! With over 50 activities, attractions and shows, new themed events every school holiday, 18,000 sq feet of indoor play, plenty of new cute and cuddly friends at the FarmYard and acres of more! Booking online is cheaper than one day and you can book HERE. They offer a disabled and carer reduction in entry costs Note- You are required to a bring along ID as a carer. This can be in the form of a professional carers employment ID, DLA/PIP letter confirming carer need or a carers allowance letter. Only one carer ticket can be purchased per dependant. Diggerland

A fun place for all ages can ride, drive and operate real diggers in a safe and family friendly setting. Diggerland at Langley park won the silver award for Accessible & Inclusive Tourism at the Land Leisure and Tourism Show and another silver award for Hospitality Team of the Year! Disabled visitors pay the same entry rate as anyone else, but each disabled visitor may bring in a carer/helper free of charge.
If a disabled visitor requires 2:1 or 3:1 care, additional carers may enter Diggerland free of charge, however valid documentation must be shown upon arrival.
Proof of disability must be presented upon arrival in order to receive free carer entry.
The carer/helper may use the rides and drives.
A carer should be someone over the age of 12 years old
They don’t accept max cards.

Beamish Museum

Beamish museum is a open air living museum near Stanley. Pay once and visit free for a year. Accessibility information HERE They have :

Sensory bags available to use during your visit, guided by their Access Panel and designed to support visitors with sensory needs. The bags include; headphones, sensory book, lavender bag, football rattle, Beamish top trumps and Jacobs ladder. The bags can be collected from the Entrance gift shop and requires a £10 refundable deposit.
A quiet space is available in the 1950s welfare hall. The room is sensory-friendly and is equipped with a washbasin, chair, sensory-friendly lights and toys and books. Access to the quiet space is on a first come, first served basis. Please speak to a member of staff in the 1950s welfare hall for access to the room.
Changing places facilities.
Free wheelchair hire is available from the Entrance Building. Contact the museum in advance to reserve to avoid disappointment: Tel. 0191 370 4000. We are able to reserve wheelchairs for visitors with 24 hours notice.

Dimensions – Autism friendly cinema screenings

Dimensions UK work with cinemas, libraries, museums and Belong by GAME Arenas. Each venue’s autism friendly training is tailored to their environment and guests. Adjustments include reduced sensory stimulation, increased signage and autism training for staff. Our training is developed with autism and industry experts, so it works for both our guests and the venues. Autism friendly screenings are held at over 300 cinemas nationwide: ODEON, Cineworld, Vue, Showcase, Picturehouse, Everyman, Light and some independent cinemas. A SEND support multi-sensory soft play centre located in Seaham that supports children & adults. It has been specifically designed to support children, young people and adults with special needs and disabilities, their families, schools and groups. Durham City Youth Project

Durham City Youth Project is for young people aged 8-19. They have lots of different sessions open to everyone, across County Durham. They’re based in Framwellgate Moor, but they have sessions at Langley Park, Wheatley Hill and Seaham.

Alan Shearer Centre

A specialist recreational, sensory and social resource for disabled people of all ages, catering to a wide spectrum of need. Facilities are completely free to use. The Alan Shearer Centre is a highly specialist, respite, residential and social facility for people living with complex disabilities and acute sensory impairments. Situated in its own grounds on the outskirts of Newcastle but they have lots of families from County Durham who use their facilitates. The Alan Shearer Activity Centre– A specialist recreational, sensory and social resource, for people of all ages living with disabilities, catering to a wide spectrum of need. Facilities are completely free to use and include a hydrotherapy suite, sensory rooms and cave, a music room, seasonal activities and a café. Overhead tracking and hoists are fitted throughout, enabling full accessibility to all areas for those with limited mobility.

The Alan Shearer Short Break Centre – Currently closed. Providing highly specialised respite breaks in a safe and specially adapted environment for people living with a range of disabilities and behavioural issues, the centre allows parents and carers a well-earned rest. It is the only short break centre in the North East with its own on-site Activity Centre, set within several acres of private and beautifully landscaped grounds.

Our Alan Shearer Specialist Residential Home. Situated within the Alan Shearer Centre, our specialist home offers residential accommodation for adults living with profound and multiple disabilities, offering longer term, safe and nurturing care and support. Pathways 4 All / Tim Lamb Centre

A North East parent led charity, offering family friendly play and leisure facilities for children and young people with disabilities & additional needs. Based in Benton but they have lots of families from County Durham who use their facilitates. The Tim Lamb Centre offers free specialist activity and leisure facilities for disabled children/ young people and their families. Our Centre is open to families with a child/ young person at any stage of their diagnostic journey and whatever their additional needs. Their facilities include a soft play area with adjoining cafe, a well equipped sensory room, large multi-purpose hall with indoor trampolines, a toddler playroom, teenage/ games room and a computer suite. They also have a large fully enclosed outdoor playground, (with high fencing) which includes a range of inclusive play and sensory equipment. Wear Mencap Multi Sensory Room

Wear Mencap Multi Sensory Room is a facility based at Great Lumley Methodist Church. It is filled with equipment to stimulate sensory development and learning and is specifically designed for young children with various disabilities.
