“Different and Equal: Education is compulsory, school is not”

For some children and young people, their needs are so severe and complex that traditional educational settings are not suitable environments and cannot meet their needs.

In these instances, it is recognised in law in the Children and Families Act 2014 that a traditional school setting or post 16 institution is not appropriate.

EOTIS / EOTAS (Education Other Than In School / Education Other Than at School) is the legal mechanism where a child or young person with an EHCP can receive special educational provision despite being unable to attend an educational setting.

Under EOTIS arrangements, a child or young person will not not be on roll at a school and will receive their education and special educational provision at home or within an external setting that is not a registered educational setting.

This is not ‘named’ in Section I, as there is no educational setting. The provision is set out in Section F of the EHCP.

Elective Home Education (EHE) is different….

Elective Home Education ( otherwise known as home schooling) is where a parent / carer chooses not to send their child to school full-time and assumes responsibility for making sure their child receives a full-time education other than at school. The LA is not obligated to support the education.

EOTIS, however, is a formal special education package made under an EHC Plan, for which the LA remains legally responsible.  If you electively home educate but have an EHCP that does not reflect an EOTIS package, the LA has no obligation to deliver the provision set out in Section F.

Their AQA programme is still open for PAYG registrations. £24.99 registration fee, £6/unit & Total freedom! Units are reviewed every Monday with personal feedback for your child each time. Supportive members group, with almost 200 other families to ask for suggestions. All staff are, or have previously, home educated their own children. They are highly skilled when it comes to finding different ways for your child to meet the learning outcomes. Home Education information and support service. Educational Freedom is a non-profit organisation providing Home Education information and support. Their primary purpose is ensuring all Home Educators have access to FREE information and support. They aim to provide everything you could ever need to know about Home Education. Education otherwise

THE Home Education Charity. Education Otherwise offers professional, insured advice and report checking services.  

Founded in 1977, the charity is now a powerhouse of support and professional expertise in home education. Their team of dedicated, professional and experienced trustees and volunteers are available on their freephone helpline which is open for 6 days a week.

Their free to access website provides the answers to the most commonly asked questions by both new and experienced home educators. Their resources section contains fact sheets and information for professionals, as well as template letters and guidance on report writing for home educators. Education Otherwise also works closely with Government, the media and local authorities to encourage a greater understanding of home education and to promote and protect the rights of home educating families.

As a charity they are funded soley by donations and memberships. Yearly membership is available from just £14 per year and members gain access to many member benefits, such as free report checking and discounts on days out and examination fees. East Durham College

For Elective Home Educationed young people 14-16 years.  The College has successfully run the service for several years, and have seen students achieve some amazing GCSE results. Their Pre-16 Provision team help support families, who have chosen to home school their children, from initial application to enrolment and onto successful completion of their course(s).

To access the home education programme, students must be equivalent in age to pupils in Year 10 and Year 11 (14 to 16 years old). However, their elective home education provision may not always be suitable for students with significant behavioural issues and those who are disengaged from education. Students who have been permanently excluded from school, or are at risk of exclusion, may be referred to alternative 14-16 provision at the College. Each application is fully explored to ensure that every student is on a programme which offers the most appropriate educational pathway and support.

Elective Home Education GCSE Programme : This two-year programme is for Year 10-11 students who are ready to undertake a GCSE programme following initial assessment. East Durham College currently offers: GCSE English Language, GCSE Mathematics & GCSE Combined Science. Students can opt to study one, two or three of these subjects in any combination. This programme is run over one day a week.

The Application Process : Students/parents complete an application form. All applicants and parents/carers are invited to attend an informal information session around March/April when they can meet staff, tour the facilities and ask any questions.  If applicable, students will have a one-to-one informal interview at the above session. Students who are successful at interview will then be invited in to complete a diagnostic assessment. The results of which will provide the College with baseline information about the student’s current knowledge level, to assist us on deciding if they have met the entry criteria to start the programme. Catch 22 at Bishop Auckland

Interactive webinars for home learning for just £2! They offer live lessons as well as recorded lessons in various subjects; all are qualified teachers who offer lessons.

Theatre of Science

Free live Facebook streaming science, history and english lessons for home educators. They’re for all ages, they’re award winning and they’re free. They teach a weekly all-ages science lesson, an IGCSE Physics lesson and a Lego Story Show.

PDA Society Home Education Hub

They know that many PDA (Pathological Demand Avoidance) children are struggling to attend school because they can’t access the support they need. Musicwonders CIC

Based in Chester-le-street, they now offer home education supportive music-making sessions for neurodivergent learners educated outside mainstream settings. Their sessions focus on:

Little Barn of Calm

Based in Castleside near Consett they are an AQA Accreditation Home Ed where each session is specific to an age group. Age groups are: 11+ years, 5-7 years and 8-10 years. They offer a diverse range of engaging activities centred around animal care, interaction, and overall wellbeing (both for the animals and our participants!). National Trust Education Group Access Pass

The Education Group Access Pass is specially designed to encourage access to National Trust places for groups including home educated. The price for a year for “Home Educating family” is currently £63.

Education Group Access Pass holders receive free entry to National Trust places in England, Wales and Northern Ireland during published opening times. Where a place offers extra educational activities, additional charges may apply.

Home Education Gymnastics

At South Durham Gymnastics at Spennymoor Leisure centre. Every Tuesday in term time, as per Durham County Council’s dates from 12pm-1.00pm for children aged 4 – 12 years who are home educated.  Costs £8.50 per child, per session. Participants will take part in a structured group warm up, before splitting off into groups to explore the equipment with qualified coaches. Life Science Centre Home Education Days

Based in Newcastle the Life Science Centre is an educational visitor attraction in the heart of Newcastle upon Tyne, with science exhibitions, live shows and the biggest planetarium in the North of England. They run regular Home Education Days. Booking essential – details on link above. £11.95.

TCR Hub – Home Ed – Outdoor activity sessions

TCR hub, Barnard Castle will be hosting a number of outdoor sessions for home educated children. There will be a mix of sessions such as high ropes, canoeing, archery and bushcraft. As sessions are weather-dependent, indoor team-building activities will be offered if the weather is unsuitable.Recommended age for participants is 8+. Beamish Museum Home Educators’ Days & EHE Mailing list.

Home educators are welcome at the museum every day. To support them, they offer reduced day entry to the museum at a rate of £7.25 per head. This is applicable on weekdays during term time. The Story, Durham

They run a child Home Ed Cook Clubs for 6-10yrs or 11-16yrs. Sessions are currently running in Consett. Cook club specifically for Home Ed families. Stomping Grounds NE

Weekly Forest School sessions for Home Educated children aged 5 – 16 at Gibside or Hagg wood , Prudhoe.  Their sessions are participant led and non accredited, meaning they don’t work to a curriculum. However, they do deliver the Wild Passport, a bushcraft skills development programme, if young people show an interest.

Older young people, aged 12+, may be given an opportunity to join their Young Leaders programme, offering training and volunteering opportunities to work alongside them in the summer holidays. Once young people are 14, they may also be able to do their Level 1 Forest School training with them.

Because they are Ofsted registered, if you are in receipt of Universal Credit you may be able to claim up to 80% of the cost of these sessions back. You can also use Childcare vouchers and tax free child care entitlement. The Wildside North East

Based in Shiremoor they offer fornightly Home Ed -Flexi Schooling -Alternative Education sessions for 5-13 years old. The children will also learn new skills such as building fires, shelters, plan and cook your snacks on the fire, work with tools, and make crafts using natural materials. These fortnightly sessions will help support our learners to forge friendships and be part of a community, develop skills in learning, playing and working collaboratively, taking risks, grow confidence and resilience. The Bunker CIC

Based in Sunderland they offer rehearsal rooms, recording facilities and music tuition providing a base and space to develop for bands and artists.

The Bunker’s weekly music sessions for Home Ed students aged 8-18, are currently Mondays 1-3pm and cost £7.50 per child. The young people work together in a ‘band’ format, guided by one of their tutors, learning cover versions of popular songs. They work towards a short performance for parents to attend every term. The students are mixed age, mixed ability and varied instruments including drums, bass, guitar, piano, ukulele and singing. There are a maximum of only 8 in each group, but they have 17 professional music studios, so there is always certainly room for more to join. As long as each student likes music, is up for trying new things and happy for you to leave them with us for 2 hours.

Their tutors are all experienced and have enhanced DBS checks. They have plenty of instruments for students to use but if they prefer to bring their own, that’s fine. Does your child have any experience of playing an instrument? It’s fine if not, they can give them a little 1-1 and if they can practice at home, they’ll be up to speed on no time. The Kayaks Charity Home Ed group

Based in South Shields, South Tyneside they offer support, advice and friendship to families in the North East of England. In addition to this they can help with benefit claims and representation at meetings and advocacy. They offer monthly home ed social session with occasions trips. Free. Great North Museum – Hancock

Hancock Museum in Newcastle run regular Home Educators Day events. Join them for a full day of activities just for families with children who are Home Educated, Home Schooled and not currently in school education. Activities will suit a range of ages and abilities, with the majority of activities aimed at a Primary level. You are welcome to bring any age child along to this event.  Between 9.00am – 2pm, staff and organisations will be in the museum running activities from making to demonstrations, object handling and discussion.  Next home education day isn’t available on their website at the moment.

They also have Home Educators – Time Odyssey – An exciting free learning adventure for KS2 level learners at the Great North Museum: Hancock. Time Odyssey is a fun, interactive learning experience that takes learners on a quest through their local museum – physically and virtually. ( For year 4,5 & 6 pupils)

Daisy Chain Home Ed Forest School

Forest School is a great opportunity for children and parents/carers to bond with the outdoors whilst achieving personal and social developments. Children are able to take the lead with a hands on approach to forestry activities.

  • Fridays during term-time
  • 2 sessions: 10am-12pm / 1pm-3pm
  • 6 years+
  • Block booking required to secure space. Payment plans available. Payment on a half-termly basis.

To access these sessions, a child must be either elective home educated or have their schools permission to attend.

Daisy Chain specialises in strategies and approaches that are compatible with: Autism, ADHD, FASD, Sensory processing differences, anxiety and social and communication differences. For a young person to attend they must be either diagnosed, on the pathway or have been identified by a professional as having a need relating to the listed neurodiversities.

The Curiosity Lab

Previously called Little Sparks Science – The Curiosity Lab is a children’s activity in the North East with a difference- allowing children to get hands-on with fun science. They currently run monthly Home Education classes in Stockton and Durham from 3 to 14 year olds. This includes CREST Award and weekly Physics classes for 11-14 year olds. The Sill – National Landscape Discovery Centre

Based in Hexham , The Sill National Landscape Discovery Centre offer education sessions specifically for Home Educators. Throughout the year they host a range of activity days for home educated children and their families. These sessions are practical, hands on and interactive, designed to suit a variety of age groups . Past activities include mini beast hunts and pond dipping, bushcraft skills, and farm visits. Newcastle Circus Art

Newcastle Circus Art offer a Home Education Programme. They integrate social circus as a dynamic and enriching platform for learning, emphasising its nurturing, inclusive, and supportive environment. Through circus arts, they facilitate the development of essential life skills such as physical awareness, teamwork, collaboration, creativity, and skill focus. Participants engage in a multidimensional learning experience that extends beyond traditional academic boundaries. Social circus becomes an invaluable tool in breaking down social barriers, offering a unique space for individuals, including those who may be non-verbal or communicate through physical means, to express themselves and find their place within a supportive community. This approach fosters a sense of belonging and encourages personal growth, creating a holistic learning setting where the circus arts serve as a conduit for both skill-building and social integration. Rainbows Sensory Space

A SEND support multi-sensory soft play centre located in Seaham that supports children & adults. It has been specifically designed to support children, young people and adults with special needs and disabilities, their families, schools and groups. They provide opportunities for bridging the barriers that disabled people often face by creating an accessible, inclusive and nonjudgemental environment where children and adults can control a variety of sensory experiences in a safe space . They have access to ceiling track , hoists, a disabled toilet with hand rails and height-adjustable changing bed. They offer private hire to families, schools and groups, coffee mornings, SEND support groups, SEND social opportunities, (after school clubs), playgroups, baby sessions, home education peer support, training events for parents/carers and birthday parties,  Specialist therapy sessions available –  music therapy, story massage and sensory stories. Enter CIC – Private Exams North East

Based in Ferryhill Enter CIC is a community engagement organisation. An approved private exam centre, learning provider, and an award-winning creative, cultural & heritage hub.

Established and experienced Private Candidate Exam Centre set up to facilitate private candidates, resits and adult learners. Head of Centre is a current home educator and as such is very knowledgeable about the challenges facing external and private candidates wishing to sit examinations. AQA, OCR, Edexcel, WJEC, and CAIE examinations boards. Supports Science Practicals via dedicated partner.

Caters for GCSE, IGCSE, A Level, BTEC, Functional Skills, AQA Award Units, Oxford Admissions Tests. Tuition is also available at this centre. One of the only exam centres in the UK that, as well as all academic subjects, also supports creative subjects such as Art, Craft and Design and Drama. Supports coursework marking and validation as well as MFL and English Spoken Language assessments for Private Candidates.

  • BBC Bitesize – Provides support for learners aged 3 to 16+ across a wide range of school subjects. It also supports children and young people’s wellbeing and career choices. Bitesize also has hundreds of published lessons to help students across the UK with home schooling. Bitesize guides are written by teachers and subject experts and are mapped to follow the curricula of the UK. Secondary Bitesize follows exam board specifications for the main exam boards in the UK, including for GCSE.
  • Day out with the kids homeschooling resources – Homeschooling Resources, Sites & Activities.
  • Jump Start Jonny – PE for primary school children. He has a ‘Free Stuff’ section on his website to keep everyone active at home. He also has a YouTube channel.
