Durham County Carers Support

A charity supporting unpaid carers 18 years+ in County Durham. Access Card

Access Card is in response to frustrations shared by disabled people and live music promoters in how disability was evidenced, and how needs for reasonable adjustments were communicated. The card is wideley accepted at major event venues across the UK And beyond, and even more widely taken simply at face value. It costs £15 for 3 years. 

CEA Cinema card

Enables a disabled cinema user 5 years+ to receive a complimentary ticket for someone to go with them when they visit a participating cinema or theatre . Card costs for £6.50 a year but cardholder must be in receipt of certain disability benefits. Telephone: 01244 526 016

Not Fine In School

Information, Support, Research, & Action for School Attendance Difficulties. Their aim is to offer information, research and campaigns that relate to ‘School Refusal’ and barriers affecting school attendance. INFORMATION: A space to join with people who are concerned about children experiencing difficulties attending school – for reasons including anxiety and other mental health difficulties, unmet SEND needs, or bullying. ACTION: A place for people who would like to be involved in raising awareness or campaigning for better support and provision; for improved recognition of family and children’s perspectives; and for a change in thinking about the issues that affect school attendance. RESEARCH: A space to share research, related information and news. A place to join in with research into school anxiety & refusal as it is linked to our current university research activities. Neurodevelopmental Pathway.

The new needs led pathway for ADHD and Autism diagnosis from age 5-18. A panel will decide, based on the child / young persons referral form ; whether they will be put on to the pathway or not. The Patient Advice and Liaison Service (PALS) offers confidential advice, support and information on health-related matters. Emotional health, advice and guidance for 5-19 years. Children’s Physiotherapy

Durhams Children’s Physiotherapy Service works with children of all ages from 0-16 years old, (and 0-18 if in specialist education). They aim to support our children and young people to achieve their potential and encourage active participation in their daily life.

Mobilise

They are a national online business led by carers, for carers.They provide online support for unpaid carers, a weekly email of carers’ top tips, community support and a space to connect with people in similar position & have been funded by Durham County Council. They offer –

They provide light touch, preventative engagement using channels most carers are already using e.g. email and social media. They can also connect carers so they can support each other.They work alongside Durham County Carers support freeing them up to do more face to face, complex case work or carers assessments.

A kinship carer is defined as a family member, friend, or other connected person who steps in to care for a child when their birth parents are unable to do so, either temporarily or permanently. A high % of children and young people being looked after by a kinship carer have some sort of SEN. Below are some kinship specific organisations.

Dimensions – Autism friendly cinema screenings

 Dimensions UK work with cinemas, libraries, museums and Belong by GAME Arenas. Each venue’s autism friendly training is tailored to their environment and guests. Adjustments include reduced sensory stimulation, increased signage and autism training for staff. Our training is developed with autism and industry experts, so it works for both our guests and the venues.  Autism friendly screenings are held at over 300 cinemas nationwide: ODEON, Cineworld, Vue, Showcase, Picturehouse, Everyman, Light and some independent cinemas. A SEND support multi-sensory soft play centre located in Seaham that supports children & adults. Durham City Youth Project

Durham City Youth Project is for young people aged 8-19.  They have lots of different sessions open to everyone, across County Durham. They’re based in Framwellgate Moor, but they have sessions at Langley Park, Wheatley Hill and Seaham.

Alan Shearer Centre

A specialist recreational, sensory and social resource for disabled people of all ages, catering to a wide spectrum of need. Facilities are completely free to use.  The Alan Shearer Centre is a highly specialist, respite, residential and social facility for people living with complex disabilities and acute sensory impairments. Situated in its own grounds on the outskirts of Newcastle but they have lots of families from County Durham who use their facilitates. The Alan Shearer Centre comprises three specialist facilities on the same site:

The Alan Shearer Activity Centre– A specialist recreational, sensory and social resource, for people of all ages living with disabilities, catering to a wide spectrum of need. Facilities are completely free to use and include a hydrotherapy suite, sensory rooms and cave, a music room, seasonal activities and a café. Overhead tracking and hoists are fitted throughout, enabling full accessibility to all areas for those with limited mobility.

The Alan Shearer Short Break Centre – Currently closed. Providing highly specialised respite breaks in a safe and specially adapted environment for people living with a range of disabilities and behavioural issues, the centre allows parents and carers a well-earned rest. It is the only short break centre in the North East with its own on-site Activity Centre, set within several acres of private and beautifully landscaped grounds.

Our Alan Shearer Specialist Residential Home.  Situated within the Alan Shearer Centre, our specialist home offers residential accommodation for adults living with profound and multiple disabilities, offering longer term, safe and nurturing care and support. Pathways 4 All / Tim Lamb Centre

A North East parent led charity, offering family friendly play and leisure facilities for children and young people with disabilities & additional needs. Based in Benton but they have lots of families from County Durham who use their facilitates. The Tim Lamb Centre offers free specialist activity and leisure facilities for disabled children/ young people and their families.  Our Centre is open to families with a child/ young person at any stage of their diagnostic journey and whatever their additional needs.  Their facilities include a soft play area with adjoining cafe, a well equipped sensory room, large multi-purpose hall with indoor trampolines, a toddler playroom, teenage/ games room and a computer suite.  They also have a large fully enclosed outdoor playground, (with high fencing) which includes a range of inclusive play and sensory equipment. Children in Need Emergency Essentials Fund

Their Emergency Essentials programme supports individual children and young people living with severe poverty, a lack of the basic facilities which most of us take for granted and additional pressures such as domestic violence, disability or poor health in the family. The programme provides items that meet children’s most basic needs such as a bed to sleep in, a cooker to give them a hot meal, clothing (in a crisis) and other items and services that are critical to children’s wellbeing. In response to increased demand for essential goods from families living with severe financial, health and social difficulties which affect children’s wellbeing, BBC Children in Need has increased its commitment to Emergency Essentials to an annual fund of £3m. Note- You must be referred for this programme.

Buttle UK

They provide Chances for Children grant. grants to children and young people whose development, health and wellbeing are at risk and who have experienced a range of health, social and emotional difficulties. Their small grants programme provides grants for things like : Items and activities to support learning and development such as laptops, books, wi-fi, educational toys, tuition, etc ☆ clothing and school uniforms ☆ social, sporting and leisure activities ☆ family activities ☆ items for children’s or young people’s bedrooms ☆ household items that are not available from other sources and which directly address the children’s needs.

Applications must be made by the statutory or voluntary organisation supporting the family or young person who is capable of assessing their needs. Individually tailored grants of up to £2,400 for children and young people who have experienced a crisis that has recently had a significant and enduring impact on their wellbeing and educational engagement.

Children and young people must meet the following criteria:

  • Aged from 2 to 18 (including 18 year olds) if living with parent or carer OR aged 20 and under if living independently with little or no support from their family.
  • Accessing early, primary, secondary or post 16 education/training for a minimum of 12 hours per week
  • Living on a low income and experiencing financial hardship
  • Have experienced a crisis that has recently had a significant and enduring impact on: their wellbeing , their development and education.

Disability Facilities Grant

If a member of your household struggles to get around the house safely because they are elderly or disabled, there may be help available. Disabled facilities grants assist people to live independently by helping to fund suitable adaptations to their properties. A maximum of £30,000 is available.

You must have an assessment by an occupational therapist first, as a grant is based on your essential needs. They will come to your home and assess what aids and adaptations might be available to help. Contact Social Care Direct to arrange an assessment. All applicants must undergo a financial means test, unless the grant is for a disabled child. This will indicate what, if any, financial contribution must be made towards the work. County Durham Wellbeing For Life Service

There to help you with your health and wellbeing. From healthy eating, exercise to mental wellbeing and stopping smoking. Wellbeing for Life is a service commissioned by Durham County Council and delivered by County Durham and Darlington NHS Foundation Trust and Pioneering Care Partnership (PCP) who have years of knowledge and experience of working and supporting local people across County Durham. Their services aim to empower you to tell us what is important to you and to support you to make positive choices that will benefit you and your life!

One-to-one support – Wellbeing Practitioners will work with you over eight to twelve sessions to set a health plan, which will include small achievable goals that you would like to achieve. The one to one sessions typically last for one hour and is time for you to focus on yourself and what support you would like from the service: eat healthier / lose weight / gain weight, be more active, stop smoking, educate you in alcohol and drug awareness and access services in your local community

Group Support –  Wellbeing Practitioners will work with you in a friendly group session, which typically lasts for one hour- in order to: be more active , learning about healthy eating and practical cooking and improve your mental wellbeing,

Children and young people have rights, and are full citizens now. They are the experts of ‘being them’ and of their own ‘lived lives’. They have a dedicated team of staff, volunteers and student placements, running groups, projects, forums, training and research putting children and young people at the centre of all they do.

Investing in Children is a Community Interest Company. Established in 1995 originally as a partnership between Durham County Council and the NHS its purpose is to promote the rights of children and young people, and to ensure that their voices are heard in decisions that are made about them within public and voluntary sector services. In recent years Investing in Children has become more involved within the mental health agenda with links to both Children’s and Adults’ Services in a range of roles including coordination and project delivery as well as leading on young people’s engagement and participation. Investing in Children currently oversees the coordination and delivery of the following projects:

  • The coordination of  the County Durham Time to Change Hub
  • Delivery of the Young Adults Support Cafes (YASC) Groups – 16-21-year-old emotional wellbeing peer support projects
  • The coordination of the Emotional Wellbeing Locality Forums
  • The coordination of the Alternative to Crisis/ Preventing Admissions work
  • The coordination of the Children and Young People’s Mental Health and Emotional Wellbeing Network
  • Joint coordination of United Voice (Children and Families Advisory Board for mental health co-delivered with Rollercoaster Family Support)
  • Support role within the CAMHS Participation Groups

EPEC

Empowering Parents, Empowering Communities (EPEC) is a parenting approach that trains local parents to lead groups that support other local parents. They run courses including a being a Parent of a child with Autism course. All courses are highly interactive, involving small and large group discussion, role play, demonstrations, information sharing and reflection. Blue Badge

Who may be eligible for a Blue Badge? Examples of who may be eligible, are people who: have evidence of enduring and substantial difficulties with walking ability and/or managing journeys outdoors, are registered as severely sight impaired , are children under 3 who:

  • on account of a condition must always be accompanied by bulky medical equipment which cannot be carried around with the child without great difficulty; and/or
  • on account of a condition must always be kept near a motor vehicle so that, if necessary, treatment for that condition can be given in the vehicle or the child can be taken quickly in the vehicle to a place where such treatment can be given.
  • have evidence of non-visible (hidden disabilities) such as autism, dementia and anxiety disorders that causes you to:
    • be unable to walk
    • experience very considerable difficulty when walking, which may include very considerable psychological distress
    • be at risk of serious harm, or pose a risk of serious harm to other people, when walking

Newcastle airport hidden disabilities information

Airports can be busy environments and they understand that for those people who are travelling with hidden disabilities this can make going on holiday a stressful experience. Bridge Bus travel card

Nexus operate the scheme in partnership with bus companies, the Tyne & Wear metro & Shields Ferry. If you show the card to the driver or station staff they will give you extra help.

Little Treasures

Are a parent-led charity that supports families and their children who have autism or are going through assessment right across Co. Durham and surrounding areas. They run stay-and-play sessions, adult groups ( together with Autie Mates) , parent support groups and run courses and workshops. They also have a closed support group Facebook page for help and advice.

Are a parent led charity who organise events, activities and support for children with all disabilities and their families locally. They have a facebook page and facebook group

Parenting Mental Health – North East England

Has taken over the old Rollercoaster Facebook support group. 

The Sensory place 

A volunteer-led group offering a network of support to families of children with all disabilities aged 5-18 years. They offer courses and sensory-friendly events ( Including Sensory Sessions at South Durham Gymnastics and silent discos). They can help whether your child is a sensory seeker or avoider (or both). They also have a closed Facebook group

Autism Information Co Durham 

A closed group purely for the Parents/Carers of children with Autism and children currently going through the diagnosis process. A place for to provide help and support to you all and somewhere you post feeling secure that we are all in it together. They get together once or twice a month in person in the Spennymoor area.

Little Chefs Big Chefs (LCBC)

SEND Parents/Carers Drop In once a month – usually a Tuesday 10am-12pm. A drop in session for parents/ carers of children with special educational needs, or disabilities. LCBC Community Hub, Selby Close, DL14 9ED

North East Autism Society Family Support

They have a closed Facebook group for any help and support plus several friendly and inclusive toddler groups and family support sessions all over County Durham and other parts of the North East.

Durham County Carers Support

 They run several support groups for all carers all over County Durham and a parent support group in Bishop Auckland once a month.

OOOPS

The group supports people that are preparing for stoma surgery or already have a stoma for any reason. You could have IBS, IBD, Endometriosis or any other digestive system related complications. All Disabilities Matter

Based in Newton Aycliffe their facebook group was formed to support anyone who has any kind of disability, mental health issues or just wants somebody to talk to about all the daily struggles that life can throw at us, so we can all share our experiences with each other and where to go for help and support if needed.

They run regular events and groups. They host two weekly support groups on Wednesdays and Fridays for parents, carers, and individuals with disabilities. These offer participants the chance to share their experiences, seek peer support, and enjoy a chat. They also run a SEND social club on Monday evenings at Café HQ in Newton Aycliffe where  participants can take part in crafts, games, and music sessions, fostering a lively and social atmosphere. Sensory Processing Disorder Support Group North East England 

A support group run by Treetops Occupational Therapy. They have a closed Facebook page, run courses and training and meet regularly in Newton Aycliffe.
